The designs on the inksticks are:
- 福 Fu – good fortune, appears with a bat: bat in chinese has the same pronounciation 蝠 fú so a bat is lucky in China, especially upside-down since “upside-down bat” sounds the same as “fortune has arrived”
- 禄 Lu – prosperity, rank and influence, shows the Immortal sitting on a Dragon
- 寿 Shou – shows the Immortal of longevity
- 喜 Xi – two magpies: magpie is Chinese is 喜鹊 XiQue so two magpies is double Xi, double happiness
The first three 福禄寿 are also the 三官 Three Officials or Three Immortals of Daoism.
