Raymond Cheng It depends on what you want to do with it, ink left overnight tend to be more solid and less transparent, i use it to write larger size calligraphy, and find it helps the brush strokes go freer…..

Maître des clésDear Amr, thanks for your question! Generally speaking, brush hair type and brush hair size are two important elements we need to consider when we choose brush. 🙂 We recommend to choose different size brush for different size of calligraphy. Also different type of brush hair is normally more suitable for one type of calligraphy/ painting than other hair types.
1, Brush Hair Type: From the information you have provided, we can decide the brush hair type. For this calligraphy style you have described, we recommend you to try combination hair brush. This is weasel hair combined with goat hair. Sometimes, Red Star *professional brush uses some very rare hair type too.
https://www.inkston.com/shops/brushes/weaselwool-combination-calligraphy-and-painting-brush/
2, Brush Hair Size: After we decide the brush type, then we need to decide brush hair size. This is also why you can find different sizes for the brush hair. Inkston also marks each brush hair size. 🙂 For most of our brushes, we have added the ‘suitable for’ section for people to know which type of calligraphy/ painting this brush would work best.
Could you tell us what is the size of the calligraphy you are practicing now? We need this to find a proper brush hair size.

Maître des clésHi Raz,
Yes we can certainly add extra forum for chat, actually people are welcome to chat on any of the forums.
The difficulty we have is persuading the people already on Facebook to come to the forums: the Inkston « Chinese fine art and craft stories » Facebook group already has over 2,000 members, many of whom have made contributions, so that chat is quite active. If people are already on Facebook it’s easy for them to keep up with the group, but much fewer actually leave Facebook to join in the forums. We would also like to know, where can we find the art lovers who are not on Facebook?
Actually we do know a few but mostly they don’t like to use computers too much so they don’t visit too often either…And we share all forums posts automatically on Inkston facebook group. Your paintings are always very popular. 🙂

Maître des clésHello! glad that finally this is noticed by someone. 🙂 Su Ink is called 宿墨. The great Chinese artist 黄宾虹 Huang Bin Hong used this special technique for most of his paintings and he is also famous for this style.
Our friend Wang Zirang, a famous artist in China, follows 黄宾虹Huang Bin Hong’s style. You can read our interview with him. In this interview, he talks about this special technique.
Su Ink painting tips: https://www.inkston.com/stories/people/wang-zirang-ink-painting/
Wang Zi Rang’s gallery: https://www.inkston.com/stories/art/wang-zirang-%E6%B1%AA%E5%AD%90%E8%AE%A9-painting-gallery-joy-su-ink/
As for me, I tried to make some ‘overnight ink’ myself. I used Old Hu Kai Wen’s high grade natural inkstick to make fresh ink and then left it in reservoir for a couple of days. The glue used for making these high end inkstick is animal gelatin. And the ink itself is very thick and dark. It is nice. But I don’t like to always have the smell of ink through the house, probably it would be better if I had a separate studio. :p

Maître des clésbeautiful! I just remembered that Neil (our friend) told me that he likes using tea to get a special colour background for his papers. I like his birds and flower paintings.

Maître des clésDear riekjecares, again you have very nice questions. Thank you! According to the context and the photos you sent to us, the brushes are both weasel hair brush, which is also referred to as ´wolf brush´. The names which the author used for these brushes do not indicate any useful information because different workshops usually name their brushes differently. Normally in order to identity the brush, we would need the brush hair type and hair size. This is the best way to find the correct brush. However, according to these photos and the brush list shown in the photos, we would say these brushes could be,
calligraphy:
or, https://www.inkston.com/shop/brushes/red-star-pro-prune-dot-lang-hao-weasel-brush/
landscape brush:
These brushes listed above are classic wolf brushes for students. And Inkston´s strict quality control also make these brushes perfectly suitable for professionals too.

Maître des clésSimilar to using seals for painting, putting extra context on Chinese painting has strict regulations too. However, it is not compulsory to write calligraphy for serious painting. In Chinese, we refer this as 題款 Ti Kuan. One of the important functions of Ti Kuan is to keep the whole painting well balanced in terms of structure. If you read our article on the sue of Seals for Chinese art works, you would find Ti Kuan and seals have similar functions.
In terms of content, Ti Kuan refers to two subjects. 題 Ti refers to the poems or small articles you write on the painting. 款 Kuan includes detailed information of the painting itself. These details include when the painting is done, who did the painting (artist’s signature), artist seal, etc. Sometimes, 款 Kuan also include where the artist is from, at what age the artist did the painting, where the painting is done. If this painting is made specially as present for someone, it is a common practice to include the present recipient’s name on the painting too. The recipient’s name should also include salutation, title, and other necessary information about him.
A special note on signing date for the painting: we use Sexagenary cycle to refer to time. This Chinese system has specific names for each specific year, season, month, days, etc. I have posted the system below,

Maître des clésHi riekjecares,
I would prefer to choose a name which can combine your European name’s pronunciation and the meaning. To be specific, I would like to choose some Chinese characters which have similar sound and then select the most suitable character which can represent your European name’s meaning most. There are many Chinese characters have same/ similar sound. Therefore, it is not that difficult to select your own characters. If you need to find any one, please do not hesitate to send me a private message and I would be happy to discuss it with you till we find a nice name. 😉
