KeymasterOn Sunday I went to Hangzhou National Wetland Park to paint. It was not convenient to take Xuan paper with me. Therefore, I used French Canson watercolour paper 185 g/m2, 90lbs. This is my favorite watercolour papers. And I painted with Sakura’s Chinese paints. Although the Chinese colours performed as well as normal western watercolours on Canson watercolour paper, I still prefer to paint on handmade Chinese xuan papers which can absorb the colours and, hence, create very unique colour effects.
And, for convenience, I travelled with a plastic watercolour plate. However, I didn’t like it at all after using white ceramic colour plates all the time. The colours were sort of ‘attached’ on the plastic surface too much. On the contrary, when the colours are applied on ceramics, the colour is so much easier to be mixed, diluted, etc. I think I will never use plastic colour plate any more.
This is the painting I tried on Canson watercolour paper:

Keymaster(shy!) my very first class on painting peony with Chinese materials. I used expert birds and flower papers, Gufa Da Bai Yun Jian Hao Combination brush for peony flower petals, and 0403Ws Lang Hao for peonoy leaves, Red Star Lang Hao S for the details. Normally I prefer using the natural mineral Chinese colours from Old Hu Kai Wen 老胡开文 or Jiang Si Xu Tang 姜思序堂 but this time I simply used the Japanese Sakura liquid paints for Chinese paintings. The colours are better than Marie’s but I would still prefer natural mineral colours which are much more bright, intense, and behaves much better with the paper.
Anyway, lolol, definitely need to try very hard to learn the painting skills and practice calligraphy to be better at controlling the materials. 🙂
