SuperadministradorThanks! 🙂 It is a good idea but still we would recommend using natural stone surface because this has perfect friction coefficient to make fine ink.
We have 白陶砚. If you need it, please contact us. 🙂

SuperadministradorWe do not like silicone paper to mount your painting because this does not allow you to maintain your painting later. The silicone makes your painting attached to the mounting paper firmly and does allow you to separate the painting from the mounting paper later for maintenance. However, yes, silicone paper is very simple to use. This is widely used for mounting work which is done by machine instead of traditional Chinese method.
For mounting, you mount the painting on several layers of mounting papers. The mounting paper can be mulberry paper. There are 2 types mounting papers available in our shop. One is the thick mounting paper and the other is thick cotton mounting paper. The ‘frame’ is mounting silk. You can find all these materials in our mounting section. https://www.inkston.com/shops/accessories/mounting/

SuperadministradorYes, 一两,二两 is the standard way for inkstick weight. This should be 30g, 60g. On our website, we just listed it as S, M, L so that it could be easier for people to know the size easier. S is 30g, 一两; M 60g, 二两.
As for the weight you have mentioned, it does not always accurately match the 30g, 60g, etc. This is because the fresh ink weighs more than ‘older’ inks due to losing moisture contained in inkstick. This is getting so obvious when you look at Old Hu Kai Wen inksticks which are 20 years old and you will find the inkstick weighs so much lighter than freshly-made inkstick. 🙂
Yes, how to mark the weight clearly is very important. We have decided to edit our weight system on inkston.com for inksticks.
🙂 I hope this is helpful! And thanks a lot for pointing out this problem.

SuperadministradorDear Ms. Marie,
Thank you very much for contacting us! There are many different ways to apply gold leaf and different interesting tools/ materials are used. For the brush, we recommend you to use brush with stiff animal hairs such as weasel hair, horse hair, rabbit hair.
According to the hair grade and the performance, we list these three types brushes from best to ordinary.
- Top: rabbit hair brush (it is normally small because top rabbit hair is very valuable and rare. The brush is the finest. It is suitable for very delicate application of gold leaf.)
https://www.inkston.com/shops/brushes/zi-hao/
- Good: pure weasel hair. You can find different sizes and this is the mostly used brushes.
https://www.inkston.com/shops/brushes/weasel-hair-brush/
- Ordinary: horse hair brush. It is very economic. However, the hair might be too stiff and would sometimes break gold leaf. You need to be careful.

For me, any brush from them listed above would be a suitable one. ? We would also recommend you to prepare some other materials to make the most of these very fine gold leaves. I am not sure if you are familiar with gold leaf application already. In Chinese art, we would also use materials such as Vaseline, natural glue, bamboo knife, etc.
Ah, yes, I would very much recommend you to prepare a bamboo knife because this is very useful when you need to cut the gold leaf.

Thank you very much for your enquiry! We are also preparing one article about different skills to apply gold leaf. These skills include traditional Chinese methods and very interesting skills shared by our European clients who themselves are professional artist. ? Please do feel free to contact us at any time!

SuperadministradorThey both can be suitable for your need. 0200WsWl is slightly bigger than Red Star Jian Hao brush. The 0200WsWl brush also uses higher grade hairs than Red Star Jian Hao brush and it is currently on good discount. The price difference is because of the hair grade and hair size. I think you might find 0200WsWl more economic. However, both of these 2 brushes are quite nice choices. 🙂
0200WsWl: Brush Hair Size: 1.4 * 6.2 cm; Brush Size: 32 * 1.8 * 1.8 cm.
Red Str Jiang Hao Combination Brush #1 : Brush Hair Size: 6 * 1.4 cm; Brush Size: 28 x 1.1 x 1.1 cm.

SuperadministradorAlthough all brushes have their own lifespans, high quality brushes are always much endurable than lower quality ones. you will find high quality brushes will lose almost no or very little hair if you use them properly. Also high quality brushes also mean the brush hairs have higher grades, purer, etc. After you have used different quality brushes, you will notice the big difference no only in terms of brush’s lifespan but also in terms of how ‘cooperative’ you brush is for you painting.

SuperadministradorAgree with what David Reid said, you can use thick woollen blanket. 🙂
You can also consider the size L thicker painting mat from Inkston:
size L has thickness of 30 mm which is quite suitable.

SuperadministradorThanks for this question! In fact, I had the same problems many times. I found Marie’s tubes are very easy to be broken. Now, I like using Jiang SiXu Tang’s natural pigment chips. They are light, portable, easy to use (dissolve in clean water), and the colours are much better too. I would recommend this for you. Another thing I like about these pigments are that you can buy colours separately according to you needs.

SuperadministradorWe currently do not have rooster feather brush yet. However, you can also use horse hair brush. 🙂
