Maître des clésHi BeiLi, sorry I made a mistake and got corrected today by one Chinese artist in Shanghai. For mounting, if you use thin mounting paper, please try to mount it twice. If you use the thick paper, one layer is enough.
I have not tried to mount twice myself yet because I feel one layer is nice already. However, this artist insists to mount twice *get two layers if you use thin paper. I think we should consider his advice seriously. 🙂 How do you think?

Maître des clésGongbi master Huang GuoHong replied: sometimes I need to use a lot of paints for large scale painting. However, almost all Chinese paints are in small portion. Especially the professional paints from Jiang SiXu Tang. In order to speed up the paint preparation, I sometimes also use Acrylic paint for large scale colour application.
Nevertheless, only very few Acrylic paint colours are suitable for painting on Xuan Paper. I have tested almost all the colours and found only very few types. I suggest you test the colour before you use it to paint on Xuan Paper.

Maître des cléswash your brush every time after you finish using them. Then use a piece of xuan paper *new or used xuan paper to absorb extra water from the brush hair gently. Then use your fingers to gently organize the brush hair into the original shape. Afterwards, hang the brush on a brush hanger. Do not leave the brush hanger under strong sunshine directly.
moqiao’s brush hanger would be a perfect choice. It is economic and useful.
use your fingers to reshape your brush hair like this after using paper to absorb extra water from it.

Maître des clésThis artist shares the same opinion as you. The reason for changing brush so frequently is that the brush tip becomes ‘blunt’ quickly. According to his experience, he said this take 7 days on average since he paints almost 6 hours each day. Foe less used brushes, he changes in around 30 days. He also prepared a very small comb to take care of the brush hair. He combs the hair often so that the hair does not get mixed up, which happens quite often after you have used the brush for a while.
When the brush tip is ‘blunt’, you can still keep it for other painting purposes. 🙂 Do not throw them away because they are still useful. In Chinese, we say ‘if you treat your tools well, they will treat you well. :)’.

Maître des clés5th novembre 2017 à 1:29 en réponse à : how to flatten wrinkles on Xuan paper before painting? #16287罗雁 LuoYan
Maître des clésGreat idea! And, some artists in China also prepare a hairdryer in their study. The hairdryer is used for many purposes and dry xuan paper is one of the functions. 🙂
And in fact it is even not necessary to flatten the paper. Some artists such as Fu BaoShi 傅抱石 wrinkled Xuan paper very much before he started painting. The creased paper will help create very natural textures for the painting. Next time when you want to paint rocks, try this trick and hopefully you will get a nice surprise. 🙂
