Set of 3 Red Star Xuan brushes named “Mo, Xiao, Ran.” (墨、潇、然) meaning ink, natural, correct.
The shafts are made of precious hardwood Guibourtia with smooth surface and natural shine.
The 3 brushes are made of different hair types designed to suit different artistic needs:
- Mo: Marten hair, 12 * 55 mm, suitable for freehand flowers, birds, figures.
- Xiao: Wool, 13 * 70 mm, suitable for cursive script and freehand impressionistic painting.
- Ran: Weasel hair, 11 * 45 mm, for the Ming and Qing style calligraphy, and freehand impressionistic flowers and plants.

Red Star is China Xuan Paper Company which promotes the best of the traditional four treasures of the study. The company was founded in 1951, is currently China’s largest Xuan paper production enterprises, and also the industry leader exhibiting at 2010 Shanghai World Expo and other events.

First time I ordered from the company and I’m absolutely satisfied with everything. Brushes are beautiful!! To me the brushes seemed high quality and sturdy. Comfortable to use. I’m absolutely in love with them. Will probably buy more brushes. I’m a beginner so I didn’t know about the glue but once the glue came off the brushes it was great.

I’m new to Chinese brush painting, and this is a great set to start with. The brushes are well made, and continue to keep their points. My only recommendation to other new painters, is to also buy a purely goat hair brush- which is something I ended up ordering later.

Fabulous Wool Brush
This Red Star wool brush is a great brush. I own one of these brushes that I purchased from Inkston about 2 months ago. I wish I owned the full set. (I have the #2 brush from the left in the supplied photo.) I primarily paint landscapes and this brush is great for that. I really like using this brush. It holds it’s tip well. And, it is what you’d call a wet brush as it holds either color or ink beautifully allowing you to fully exhaust your brush before reloading.. Inkston is also a wonderful company. They ship quickly and pack their product expertly to avoid damage in shipping. I highly recommend this company and these brushes.
